Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs.
What is SBIRT? The Life Link’s SBIRT is a federally funded, comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. SBIRT also screens for mental health disorders focusing on depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. SBIRT operates in medical settings including hospitals and clinics, to provide services to persons who otherwise may not have access to behavioral health treatment.
Screening Quickly assesses the severity of substance use and mental health disorders and identifies the appropriate level of treatment.
Brief Intervention Focuses on increasing insight and awareness regarding substance use and motivation toward behavioral change. Brief treatment for patients who screen positive for substance use and/or co-occurring disorders, who elect treatment, receive 1-12 sessions of evidenced based treatment. Modalities include Motivational Interviewing (MI), Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA), Seeking Safety and Impact. Those who score positive for mental health disorders only, who elect treatment, receive 1-3 sessions of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
Referral to Treatment Provides those identified as needing more extensive or on-going treatment with referrals appropriate to their concerns.
Teams who operate in these settings are made up of Peer Support Workers and Behavioral Health Counselors.
