The Real Treasure Discovered at the Life Link Parking Lot Sale (Hint: it’s not a crock pot)
It is true that The Life Link holds its annual parking lot sale to raise money to support our various programs; it’s equally true that the real value of this event is far greater than the money collected from the sale of butter dishes and kids’ cars seats: it is the manifestation of Life Link community spirit.
On May 1, our Parking Lot Team gathered in the chilly early morning to set up tables, organize merchandise, put out snacks and welcome our first shoppers (who showed up almost as early as we did). The team consisted of staff, residents and community volunteers who willingly gave up their Saturday to encourage shoppers, answer questions, move heavy items and collect money. By the time of our actual starting time (9 am), business was brisk and the bargaining had begun in earnest. By 9:30, Patty Cake the Clown arrived to entertain the kids so their parents could take their time making purchases.
All through the day, friends and neighbors dropped by to shop, wish us well and assure other shoppers that they really do need a battery operated meat thermometer. Some people came by just to tell us how much it meant to them to have The Life Link in their lives.
In actuality, the community effort began months before the sale. In response to ads and flyers, dozens of friends, colleagues, local social service agencies and strangers offered to donate and help out. A nurse gave us her late mother’s personal effects and then signed up as a volunteer. A woman doing community service brought her husband to pitch in with her. Another offered to empty her storage units for us.
By the time the sale concluded at 2:00 pm, the team was at once exhausted and exhilarated. “Can we do this again next month?” one resident asked, too tired to lift his head from the unsold couch he lay on.
Most of our items got bought, patrons left with lots of great bargains and staff and residents had had the special opportunity of working together. On Monday following the sale, our community support workers phoned their clients who were in need of household and kids’ articles and the leftover items were gratefully carried off. We made lots of money, but best of all, we made new friends who will continue to be involved in The Life Link community. And that is the real treasure we found at the parking lot sale!
